Kings
X

Photographed between the summers of 2012 and 2013 before the Lock Out Laws would forever change the culture of Kings Cross.

This work is the start of my obsession with nocturnal culture.

Shot on film Leica cameras, I’d set my alarm for 12am, drive to the Cross and shoot till 4 am. I shot 3 rolls a night. it was a sensitive situation in those days. Flash photography mixed with highly volatile people are never a good mix. But somehow it was always ok, until it was wan’t and even then it didn’t really seem to matter. The police were convinced that I would get stabbed, but they saw the ugly side of the Cross.
I didn’t. I don’t judge. There is no point. What is the point of freedom if all it leads to is judgement. I like to see it for what it is, a choice. It may not be my choice but that doesn’t matter. All that matters is curiosity and judgement is its nemesis.
